Childlux – Non-formal education

The Childlux – Non-formal Education project aims to document the social history of childhood in Luxembourg and, for this axis in particular, the evolution of the socio-educational framework towards non-formal education in the context of economic and social changes and the related development of the social sector from the 1970s onwards.

Over the last two decades, day care for children in Luxembourg has developed dynamically, and public spending on these facilities has also increased significantly. However, despite this significant growth, both in terms of the creation of childcare places and qualitative development, the field of non-formal education has not yet been sufficiently explored scientifically. The paradigm shift introduced by non-formal education can only be understood on the basis of a historical description of the development of childhood and the creation of childcare services by a multitude of providers over time.

Methodologically, in-depth research and analysis of historical documents will be carried out. This research will be supplemented by qualitative interviews with witnesses from the period who played a decisive role in the development of childcare.

The second axis of the Childlux project focuses on the historical analysis of child and youth protection services.
